Serendipitously, BCC’s first wrestling match of the 2018-19 season was against their final opponent of the 2017-18 season, yet the outcome was very different. BCC qualified for the region dual meet tournament last season, winning its first match against Clarksburg and then losing in the West Regional Finals to Churchill 45-27, a very respectfully end to the season. Churchill went on to become the 4A state runner-up. While perhaps not exactly the “revenge tour” our first match of the season was certainly an important one. This time BCC prevailed, winning 39-30. In the second match of the day, BCC took on Damascus and while they lost, they showed improvement over the prior year.

BCC v. Churchill: 39-30. At 106 the first match of the seasons was also Ike Guttentags’s first high school match where he faced an experienced and scrappy if undersized Jr. League state champion Ethan Nasvaderani. Ike took him down and let him up 11 times to secure the technical fall. At 113, Christian Simpson won with a pin in the first period. At 120, Alejandro Cubillan kept moving and fought hard for the first two period but was eventually pinned by his opponent. At 126, Aidan Moffit showed excellent movement and aggressiveness on his feet winning against an experienced wrestler. At 132 and 138 Eli Guttentag and Fabio Martinez both pinned their opponents, Fabio with a nicely executed butcher. At 145, Drew Guttentag wrestled hard to win his match against a tough opponent. At 152, Jeovannie Martinez was dominant, scoring a major decision. At 160, Evan Wassman wrestled an excellent match, particularly on his feet and pulled off a close win. At 170, Noah Bowers was in a very close match that he held on to win with a take down late in the 3rd period. In the next five matches 182 through heavyweight our Emmanuel Oladapo, David Folivi Jr., Andrew Atienza, Alhassane Kouyate fought hard but were outmatched by the more experienced Churchill wrestlers.

BCC v. Damascus: 19-48. After facing last year’s 4A state runner-up BCC took on Damascus, last year’s 2A state champions. Despite losing a number of talented seniors, it appears that Damascus has re-loaded once again with a crop of tough wrestlers. That said, BCC scored 19 points this year versus only 3 the previous years so we are heading in the right direction. Aiden Moffitt (126), Fabio Martinez (138), Drew Guttentag (145), Jeovannie Martinez (152) all won their matches with Aiden scoring a major decision. Ike Guttentag (106) picked up a forfeit.
