Churchill demonstrated why they are the team to beat in the 4A West division. Coming in as the underdog and then giving up 18 points in forfeits was too much to overcome for BCC. While a disappointing outcome for the Barons, there were some exciting match-ups in the upper weights. At 182, Rhys Cohen battled hard against Fio Tranquill, ranked number two in the County. The two exchanged shots in the first period but each had solid leg defense and went into the second period 0-0. Tranquill started on top in the second putting the legs in and ultimately riding Cohen out for the full two minutes. In the third Cohen gave up a reversal for the only score of the match finishing with a close 0-2 loss. The subsequent contest at 195 was also a much anticipated match-up between Gabe McAndrew and Andrew Welch who were tied for the county’s 2nd place ranking, both placing 5th in the states last year. Welch scored first and McAndrew was down 0-1 going into the third. McAndrew escaped early in the third but Welch took him down and the score was 1-3 for Welch. McAndrew escaped again and this time he had the takedown going ahead 4-3 but Welch escaped in the final seconds sending the match into overtime at 4-4. McAndrew’s quickness was the difference in the overtime as he spun behind for an exciting 6-4 win. Rounding out the team scoring, Christian Simpson and Eli Guttentag each pinned their opponents and Ryan Reynolds won his match.
