The Tennis Barons traveled to Rockville to play Division 1 powerhouse Wootton High School, which had lost just one court in the entire 2018 season. But the Barons put up a tremendous effort demonstrating the depth and potential of this team to play at the top of the division. The Barons shocked the Patriots by roaring off to a 2-0 start on the singles courts with victories by Senior Pascal Lee (6-0, 6-3) and Sophomore Zach Martel (6-1,6-4), putting the Patriots behind for the first time this season. At doubles Junior Garrick Adams and Senior Philip Gregory lost on the first court (0 & 3), and then Junior Thiem Garmani and frosh Eliot Lovinger dropped the second court (6 & 1), tying the team score at 2-2. Senior Matt Dubrow then played the best match of his season winning 4 and 4 at #3 singles putting the Barons ahead 3-2, but shortly thereafter juniors Andrew Cha and Kai Freeman dropped third doubles (0 & 2), leaving the team score tied at 3-3. This left #4 singles where junior Chan Smith, after dropping the first set at love, came from behind in the second set (despite cramps) to take the second set to a tiebreaker. His opponent eventually prevailed 7-1 for a final match score of 4-3. This was, by far, the most competitive Division 1 match of the 2018 season with great tennis, sportsmanship, and mutual respect shown by all players on the court.
