This past weekend, BCC varsity wrestling competed against a strong field of 20 teams from Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia that included some of these states top teams and several individual state champions and placers. The Barons were more competitive than the 4-4 records suggests with all of their losses except one coming down to a single match, including a 39-39 tie with Hampshire that had to be decided on criteria. Junior Jeovannie Martinez was a stand-out during the two day tournament, not only going undefeated (8-0), but also securing four pins and a technical fall along the way. Drew and Ike Guttentag also had a very strong tournament, each going 7-1 for the weekend and each scoring bonus points in five of their eight matches. Eli Guttentag, Noah Bowers, Fabio Martinez, Aidan Moffitt and Alhassane Kouyate all posted winning records. Rounding out the starting line-up was David Folivi, Evan Wassman, Emmanuel Oladapo, Andrew Atienza and Alejandro Cubillan who each contributed several wins and at least one pin to the effort. Christian Simpson, Brayden Brinson, Dan Shapiro and Sam Spagnolo also were an important part of the effort, jumping into the line-up as needed.
While the varsity team was in West Virginia, the JV team was at their first tournament of the season at Northwest High School. The team had a solid showing, dropping duals against Poolesville and Chantilly and winning their duals against Clarksburg and Quince Orchard, going a respectable 2-2 for the day. All of the wrestlers worked hard and showed great improvement. Ben Williams had a shutout match with a dominant 11-0 win. Ellis Feldman got his first pin of the season. Jake Silver lost a very close match 6-7 against Quince Orchard, but he showed resolve and wrestled till the very last second.
