After winning a close match last year (36-32) the Baron’s expected challenging competition from an improved Poolesville squad. It was a close match and BCC prevailed once again by the same 4 point margin as last year. The match started at 220, where Alhassane Kouyate’s opponent took him to the mat early in the first period with a bearhug. Alhassane was quickly back on his feet and kept his elbows in and weight low to fight off additional bearhug attempts. With his opponent offense neutralized, Alhassane went on the offensive and scored several double leg takedowns to make it 4-4 going into the 3rd period. Alhassane kept attacking and secured another takedown to win 6-5.
Andrew Atienza (285) came out with a vengeance, taking his opponent feet to back twice but wasn’t able to finish. He was subsequently caught and pinned.
Ike Guttentag got a forfeit at 106.
At 113, Christian Simpson made quick work of his opponent pinning him with a cradle.
At 120, Alejandro Cubillan displayed his usual aggressive opening gaining the first take down. Alejandro continued to take his opponent down and let him up eventually securing a 8-4 lead before hitting him with a headlock for the pin.
At 126, BCC would make a strategic forfeit to a talented Alex Carbonell, thereby bumping up wrestlers a weight class for the next several matches.
Aidan Moffitt (132) scored several takedowns in the first period. His opponent would cut his lead to 2 before Aidan took him to his back and eventually won with a major decision.
Eli Guttentag (138) took on previously unbeaten Kevin Fultz. Eli controlled the match with three takedowns and significant riding time though he was unable to turn Fultz. Fultz would initiate a push at the end with an escape and take-down but Eli prevailed 7-3.
Next up, Fabio Martinez (145) took on one of Pooleville’s most experienced wrestlers, Colin Savage. Fabio denied Colin bonus points losing in a regular decision.
At 152, Drew Guttentag was on the offensive early but couldn’t keep his opponent in bounds to secure the takedown. However, in the 2nd period Drew was on top and gained back points with a crossface. Drew would score an escape and another takedown to win 5-0.
At 160, Poolesville forfeited to Jeovannie Martinez.
So with only three matches left BCC locked up the win with a 22 point lead. Unfortunately, the next three matches would not go our way with Emmanuel Oladapo (170), Noah Bowers (182) and David Folivi Jr. (195) all succumbing to pins by Poolesville’s strong upper weights.
