Once again BCC wrestling ended the regular season with a winning record, 10-4. The postseason started with a trip to the regional duals where BCC defeated Clarksburg and ended up as the 4A West runner-up after losing to Churchill in the regional finals. The following weekend at the 2018 MCPS Wrestling Tournament, Gabe McAndrew was the 182 lb Champion, Christian Simpson placed 2nd at 106, Rhys Cohen placed 4th at 170, Eli Guttentag placed 5th at 126 and Jeo Martinez placed 6th at 145. Also representing BCC at the County Tournament were Aidan Moffitt, Justin Smith, Drew Guttentag, Charles Reynolds and Noah Bowers.
Based on their season records and county tournament placement, six wrestlers qualified for the 4A-3A West Regional tournament, including Christian Simpson, Eli Guttentag, Temuulen Tsedendorj, Jeo Martinez, Rhys Cohen, and Gabe McAndrew. Eli Guttentag placed 5th, Christian Simpson placed 4th and Gabe McAndrew placed 2nd and all three qualified for the 2018 MPSSAA State Championship.
At his first time at the State Tournament, Christian Simpson (106 lb) entered with a 36-14 record on the season and took on a #1 seeded wrestler in the first round beating him 17-4, securing a major decision. He then dropped a close one in the quarter finals and then came back to pin his first opponent in the consolation round. He would then lose in the proverbial blood round, ending up one match away from placing.
Eli Guttentag (126 lb), in his second trip to States, entered the tournament with a 35-9 season record and, like Christian, faced a #1 seed in the first round. Eli and Christian demonstrated why the West Region is viewed as the toughest in the State as he also won by major decision, 9-0. In the quarter finals, Eli faced a fellow MOCO wrestler from Springbrook and won 11-4, taking him to the semifinals and guaranteeing him a second time as a state placer. In the semifinals, Eli faced the number one State-ranked wrestler and fought hard for six minutes but ultimately came up short. Eli then again faced the same #1 seeded opponent he had in the first round who had battled back only to once again lose to Eli, this time 11-4. In the consolation finals Eli faced another MOCO wrestler, this time from Quince Orchard. Eli secured a take-down in the first period and never relinquished his lead, winning 6-2 and a ending up with a 3rd place finish.
Gabe McAndrew (182 lb), in his second trip to States, entered the tournament with a 42-5 season record and won his preliminary match 11-7. In the quarter finals he met up with a #1 seeded wrestler and won by major decision 12-2. In an exciting semifinal match-up with a tough fellow MOCO Clarksburg wrestler, Gabe found himself trailing 1-2 in the third period but came up with a take-down in the last minute to go ahead 3-2 and punch his ticket to the State Championship round. As BCC’s only State Championship finalist, Gabe would lose his final match to a world junior champion and 3x state champion. Gabe ended up with an impressive 2nd place finish.
