Barons Beat the Heat and the Trojans
The BCC Barons (1-1) notched their first win of the season with a decisive 3-0 victory over the Gaithersburg Trojans on a sweltering Saturday afternoon. The heat was radiating off the pitch as the teams dueled to a scoreless first half, despite shots by several Barons and a save in the air by Baronsâ keeper Carli Boyer.
The second half opened with a renewed charge by the Barons and nonstop pressure on the Trojansâ defense. Juniors Claire Edelstein and Maya Gutman, among others, took shots that just missed the goal, and kept the defense scrambling as the Barons out-hustled the Trojans in the punishing heat. Less than 4 minutes into the second half, junior Lili Barrett headed in a well-timed shot off a cross from senior Olivia Siegel. About 10 minutes later, speedy sophomore Sarah Haas drilled one past the keeper, putting the Barons up 2-0. The Trojans made one more attack with a high velocity shot, which Boyer deftly caught and sent back to the other end of the field. Junior Lilly Craver took a shot which deflected off the cross bar, and Barrett was there to drill it back in with about 8 minutes left in the game. Next, the Barons face Walter Johnson on Wednesday, and perennial rival Whitman on Saturday for the Battle of Bethesda where funds will be raised for Soccer Without Borders. Come cheer on the Barons and support a great cause!
