Game 1: Northwest Jaguars best B-CC Barons
The formidable Lady Barons soccer team had a tough season opener Tuesday night, falling to the Northwest Jaguars 2-1.
The first half saw both teams trading possession for 25 minutes with no serious scoring threats by either team. The Jaguars started the scoring with a run down the side of the field, followed by a cross into the box and then a crisp shot into the goal with 15 minutes left in the half. Ten minutes later, the Jaguars took advantage of a high ball landing close to the goal, punching it in for a 2-0 lead. Baronsâ playmakers Caroline Flibbert and Clare Edelstein both had shots on goal but couldnât find the net.
The Barons came out fighting in the second half, and within two minutes took a shot on goal, followed by Olivia Siegel earning a corner kick. Sophia Wallach took the kick, lofting it right to Flibbert who headed it over the goal. Overall, the Barons offense was a bigger presence in the second half, with shots by sophomore Emma McMillian, senior Georgia Tinsley, and junior Lili Barrett. At the 18 minute mark of the half, Maya Gutman received a pass from Caroline Ward and found herself open – firing a shot from the 30 that went over the head over the goalie and into the net. The Barons were not able to find the net again, leaving the contest at 2-1 Jaguars.
Newcomers McMillian, Samaya Bernardo, and Jessie Gomez made their varsity debut and contributed to the offense, defense, and midfield respectively. Next up for the Lady Barons: Saturday afternoon at Gaithersburg. Go Barons!
