Barons Wrestlers Sweep the Battle of Bethesda

On Saturday February 3rd, the Barons hosted the annual Battle of Bethesda and came away with an impressive sweep, defeating Walter Johnson 41-24 and Walt Whitman by a score of 51-21. First up was a tough Walter Johnson team, which started off with a Barons overtime loss at Heavyweight before Christian Simpson (106) got the Barons on the board with a second period pin. Jeovannie Martinez (120) earned a technical fall with a 15-0 victory, and Eli Guttentag wrestling at 126 lbs. pinned his opponent in the second period. On senior night, senior Patrick Kirlin rolled off a 12-1 win, followed by Charles Reynolds’ (152) 8-6 victory, Seamus Selmi’s (160) technical fall by a score of 23-7, and Senior Jonah Messinger (170) added a second period pin. Rhys Cohen (182) in his first match back from injury won a decisive 11-4 victory before Gabe McAndrew (195) closed out the match with a forfeit. The Whitman match began at 106 lbs. where Christian Simpson earned his second pin of the day, this time in the first period, followed by a pin by Jeovannie Martinez (120), while Eli Guttentag (126) held on to win a close 8-7 match and Antonio Barakat (132) racked up 13 points for a 13-4 major decision. Patrick Kirlin picked up his second win of the afternoon with an 18-3 technical fall, as did Charles Reynolds with a 6-5 victory, Seamus Selmi with a second period pin, Jonah Messinger with a second period pin, and Gabe McAndrew likewise earned a second period pin. Senior Tosin Aroyewun (Hwt.) pinned his opponent in the second period to complete the afternoon and the Barons sweep. The Barons finished their dual meet season at 10-4 and now head into the post-season with the JV County Tournament this Saturday at Gaithersburg HS, followed by the County Varsity Tournament on Friday-Saturday Feb. 16th and 17th.
